Mark Bell on the box squat

The Rogue Box Squat Box has an oversized 24" x 24" heavy duty rubber top, extra large base for stablity and is adjustable from 12" - 18". Use this box for box squats, step ups, Bulgarian squats, box jumps and more.

What's the difference in quad (thigh) muscle activation between a wide stance squat and a close stance squat?

The answer to this question is after you read why you need a box or a few boxes in your box. In the mean time I got another question for those Oly lifters and CrossFitters out there, where do your feet end up when you are doing snatches and cleans and you are fatigued or even worse the weight is too heavy to keep proper form? They end up wide... Wider than shoulder width correct? I'm a CrossFit® Powerlifting coach and I see this all the time, so don't try to lie about it. Because you end up wide let's train through that position and build up some super strong squat and pulling muscles.

The Box Squat allows you to sit back further getting deep into the hams and glutes. It develops the proper squatting muscles while reinforcing correct technique. The wider stance and straighter foot position used for the box squat activates the hips and helps eliminate the excessive (bounce) stretch reflex that many close stance Olympic style lifters get. This makes the box squat more challenging but will also make your regular squat stronger and more efficient.

To get full hip activation you need to push out on the sides of your feet and externally rotate. A great example of this torque and force production can be seen by top level sprinters in the beginning of the race.

This 24" x 24" box is for the widest of as**s so anyone from a Crossfittian to a Sumo wrestler can use this box. On top of that it can handle the strength exhibited by the strongest powerlifters in the world. This box is battle tested and it has stood up to many of my squat workouts at Super Training. Keep in mind my best squat is 1080 so this box can handle a crap load of pressure and I haven't seen any signs of wear and tear.

What you will get and what I'm seeing from athletes all over the world is this: with stronger hips, hams and glutes you will notice a big bump in your cleans, snatches and deadlifts with out training them as often.

The answer to the question "What's the difference in quad (thigh) muscle activation between a wide stance squat and a close stance squat?" – There is none, as proven by recent university studies! So squat wide, off of a Rogue Box Squat Box and reap the benefits of PRs, stronger hips, low back, hams, and glutes!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Multi tool Box I love box jumps and step ups and already bought the Rogue foam Plyo box and use it regularly. I wanted something in the 12-18 inch range to compliment the foam box that goes 20-30 inches. This box was the perfect choice. At 80lbs, it's not budging. I can jump on and off this thing without even a wobble. The rubber grips your feet so no slipping which is another plus. It's huge so you have margin for error on errant jumps. add to this, inverted push-ups, tricep dips, calf raises, AND box squats. I absolutely love this thing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love this thing. It has a much larger surface area for landing on with your feet or butt than the trapezium shaped plyo boxes. It's rock solid and weighs a ton which inspires confidence if your descending towards it with a heavy bar on your back. If you do a lot of box squats, jumps or step-ups, it's a sound investment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rogue Solid Squat Box Typical rogue over engineered and constructed item. Plenty of surface area, absolutely stable and fully supportive. Ok, now to suggestions after use: It is heavy and solid. I replaced those pita pins with looped snap pins so I could actually get the things out when I'm adjusting. I think the friction knobs are basically redundant and practically useless. I tilt the stand on its side to adjust the height of each leg. I'm not sure of the purpose of the slotted side of the rubber mat unless to save weight. Doing Bulgarians on the slotted side resulted in foot slipping, however the textured surface works fine for everything. The removable rubber pad makes it "easier" to adjust the leg heights...after you tilt it on its side. This thing is heavy...don't expect just anyone to be able to tote it around the room. I would recommend some optional rubber pads for the legs to protect the floors as appropriate...I am still looking for something to fill that spot. All in all, I am very pleased with its construction and versatility beyond the above observations.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Happy with purchase I hesitated several months to get this due to the price. I know squats are extremely important. However due to prior bad form because I never bothered to learn proper technique, which would have been easy in hind-sight by watching some youtube videos before trying to barbell squat, I messed up my knees. My self-diagnosis is "quadriceps tendinopathy", because it hurt at the top of my knee during squats. Well, I finally sprung for this squat box. Very pleased. The large base where you park your rear-end and its sturdiness (80 pounds), allows me the confidence to finally sit really back as I hinge my hips. I am tall, 6'3", with very long legs. By sitting back further than before, I don't have the knee pain anymore!!! That's the key to this squat box. It allows you to much more easily achieve proper form. Your health is priceless. Anything that helps you achieve better fitness is worth the extra price.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very stable I really enjoy the new squat box...stability is great and versatility with various exercises is great...the only feature I wish was a little different is the lock pins. New they're a bit stiff and don't adjust very quickly...working with a variety of different height athletes, it's sometimes a little cumbersome adjusting the box between sets.
