Rogue Deep Dish Plates

Rogue’s exclusive Deep Dish Plates are directly adapted from the vintage-style machined plates we’ve used for the Elephant Bar Deadlift event at the Arnold Strongman Classic. Sold in pairs and available in four weight increments—25LB, 35LB, 45LB, 100LB (along with 5LB and 10LB change plates)—this line is 100% Made in the USA, bringing reliable cast plate production back home for the first time in years.

The extra-wide “deep dish” design of these plates instantly harks back to the classic cast iron plates of the past, which were used for all Olympic lifts before the first bumpers were invented in the 1960s. Historically, deep dish plates were favored more for functionality than aesthetic, as their increased surface area minimized the damage to old-school wooden platforms and rubber mats when dropped—but over time, they grew to be equally prized for their vintage appearance. With Rogue’s Deep Dish Plates, we have recaptured the iconic look and feel of that era while also utilizing the latest in modern casting, machining, and finishing methods, producing plates that are much more resilient than the ones that inspired them.

We developed this series with Cadillac Casting, Inc., a Michigan-based foundry backed by nearly 100 years of history in metal casting and an unmatched reputation for quality. As with our E-Coat Kettlebells (which they also produce), Cadillac casts the Deep Dish Plates from ductile iron, which has a higher tensile strength and yield strength than standard gray iron, along with superior corrosion resistance. Precision machining on the entire back, center hub, and outer rim of each plate ensures a uniform diameter and secure fit on the bar, and the electrically applied E-coat finish goes on thinner than a traditional powder coat, allowing for a lustrous finish without losing the underlying texture of the casting. E-coat is also known for its excellent adhesion, even coverage, and overall toughness.

Rogue USA Olympic Change Plates: Along with the four Deep Dish Plates, we also now offer a new line of exclusive cast iron change plates, currently available at 10LB (produced by Cadillac from ductile iron) and 5LB (produced by Ohio’s OSCO Industries from Class 30 Grey Iron). Our USA Olympic Change Plates feature the same E-Coat finish, machined center hub, and machined outer rim as the Deep Dishes, with additional machining on the front face of the outer rim.

KEY FEATURES OF ROGUE’S DEEP DISH PLATES:

1

Inspired by History . . . and the Arnold

If you’ve seen the strongest men on Earth take on our Elephant Bar during the Deadlift competition at the Arnold Strongman Classic, then you’ve seen the plates that inspired the Deep Dish design. Like those Arnold plates, the Deep Dish Plates are also a call back to a golden age in weightlifting; built from clanging cast iron with a classic look and greater thickness and surface area than most modern plates.

Made in the USA

Rogue developed this series with two of the leading metal casting foundries in the Midwest. Cadillac Casting, Inc. (Cadillac, MI) has designed and produced a wide variety of complex and safety-critical components for the automotive industry and other industrial clients since the 1920s. This reputable, privately owned foundry employs 400 highly skilled workers, and they were more than equipped to produce the tooling for our Deep Dish Plates in-house. Additional production for the 5LB USA Olympic Change Plate was provided by OSCO Industries (Portsmouth, OH), which has operated foundries in South-Central Ohio for nearly 150 years. Both of these firms are playing a key role in bringing quality cast iron weight plate production back to the USA.

Ductile Iron

All of our Deep Dish Plates (as well as the 10LB Change Plate) are cast in ductile iron, aka nodular cast iron, which contains strong graphite nodules that make it considerably tougher than standard gray iron. Ductile iron is regularly used to make automotive components, wheels, gear boxes, and machine frames, and its superior tensile strength, yield strength, and corrosion resistance makes it an ideal option for a long-lasting, extremely robust weight plate. Please Note: The 5LB USA Olympic Change Plate is made from Class 30 Grey Iron.

Precision Machining

The entire back portion of each DD plate is precision machined, as is the center hub (where the bar sleeve goes through) and the outer rim. This unique 3-surface machining process ensures that the plates fit tightly on the bar, are uniform in diameter, and sit flush against each other when loaded.

5

E-Coat Finish

This electrically-applied paint coating was also initially developed for the automotive industry, due to its excellent adhesion, even coverage, and corrosion resistance. As a wet application, E-coat goes on thinner than powder coating, resulting in a smooth feel that retains more of the natural grit of the casting.

Heavy as wanted
They look good and they heavy nuff said. Apparently my review is too short which is why I am still typing. How much can I really talk about plates?
Yes, I recommend this product

New School
My original weights were old school York original pre USA stamped milled plates. I wanted to add more plates and purchased Rouge deep dish 45’s. I was impressed by the quality of Rouge’s castings.. No rough spots or porous surfaces. Old York plates were wonderful and have served me well for 60 years, but rogue plates are what I would buy now. It is like comparing a 1960’s corvette to a 2023 C8. Both great cars but which one performs better today?
Yes, I recommend this product

Impeccable Machining - some rust spots
I purchased the deep dish plates to replace my Troy machined plates. The machining on my Troy plates was…terrible. The center hubs has burrs and deep gouges. They were destroying my bars. The machining on the deep dish plates is by far the best I have seen. Perfectly smooth and a near mirror finish. Fits very tight on the bar; handling is a breeze thanks to the lip. And the “ping” sound they make it’s very unique - is that because they are ductile iron instead of gray? Only negative is that there were some small rust spots on several of my plates. A little 3 in 1 oil and a nylon brush took the rust spots right off. Also, the 25’s suck. There is zero lip on them; they are impossible to grab.

Deep dish, the standard for iron plates
If I could give 10 stars I would. These plates look awesome, are made in America and made by Rogue. I love them so much, this is actually my second order of deep dish plates.

Love these plates
I have bought 500 lbs of these plates and I will say everything from the milling, weight accuracy and ease of handling makes using these plates a joy. Not to mention the aesthetics are killer. Would recommend, just wish the change plates were in stock as I would purchase in a heartbeat
Yes, I recommend this product

45s are perfect! Small plates are NOT deep dish
The 45s are perfect! Awesome plates all the way around. The smaller plates are not deep dish though. It is ironic to call them deep dish. They are more shallow than an average plate. What's up with this Rogue?

Burrs, Rust, Machining quality issues
I purchased 6 x 45 lbs Rogue deep dish plates, along with 4 x 25 lb deep dish plates. Out of these 10 new plates, five of them had rust issues (on the machined back, and on the inside ring where the e-coat was misapplied), and several inside-ring machining errors, including two burrs. I don't mind machine errors on the outside, but having them on the inside ring is an issue. These have a great design, but be careful before putting them on your barbells, the burrs could scratch your sleeves. Felt like boneyard quality at full price. Won't buy these again.
