Rogue Hybrid Power Bar

The Rogue Hybrid Power Bar represents another step forward in precision machining, combining tighter tolerances with recent innovations from our popular AGGRO Power Bar to create a superior lifting experience.

Starting with the traditional “core four” attributes of a standard power bar– aggressive knurl, center knurl, reduced whip, and controlled spin–we went to work exploring ways to better optimize each of these features to the demands of today’s serious powerlifter. This included absorbing a decade’s worth of feedback from customers, athletes, and gym owners, and calibrating it with our own wealth of experience outfitting gyms and competitions at the highest levels of the iron game. Additionally we have commissioned extensive research into ways to improve every aspect of barbell design and manufacturing.

With this in mind, some aspects of the Hybrid Power Bar–including the 2XAGGRO Knurl–tested too well to make any changes. For other areas, we refined our processes to establish a new blueprint for a truly optimized Powerlifting barbell that’s also uniquely versatile compared to its competitors. Some of these specific features are detailed below:

Built with uncoated stainless steel and our ultra-aggressive 2XAGGRO knurl, the grip is perfect for powerlifting; feeling exactly the same as when it comes out of the lathe and exactly as we intended. Uncoated bars result in a grip that is very firm and less reliant on chalk, but not overly sharp or uncomfortable on the hands/back/neck. To make the sleeves as maintenance-free as the shafts, we chose our Proprietary Matte Black finish, which converts the surface of the steel and will stay black much longer than other black finishes.

The most obvious difference between the Rogue Hybrid Power Bar and the remainder of our power bar line is our choice of a 28.5 MM shaft instead of a 29 MM shaft. This accomplishes two things. First, the knurl feels more prominent than it would on a thicker shaft. Second, the narrower design benefits athletes that incorporate power cleans or other Olympic lifts into their powerlifting program, as it makes the hook grip easier to achieve. It is also helpful for deadlifts, where a slightly smaller shaft leads to a more reliable grip.

We added new precision machined bronze bushings that fit tighter around the shaft, leading to less radial endfloat. We have also tightened the tolerances around our sleeve attachment, leading to less axial endfloat. This results in a reliable controlled spin that is not so free-spinning as to cause instability when benching or squatting and will not keep spinning at the top of the clean.

Our proprietary matte black finish is one of our most durable treatments because it converts the surface of the steel rather than coating it, meaning that it is less affected by sliding plates on and off. The treatment also hardens the surface of the steel which further improves durability. In response to customer feedback for sleeves with this treatment, we have created a new low-profile surface finish for the underlying steel.  By using advanced optical profilometry to gauge the sleeve finish, we are able to ensure that the profile of the sleeve is exactly as designed.

We chose a very specific stainless steel that we discovered when developing the Elephant Bar for the deadlift competition at the Arnold Strongman Classic. This steel has a tensile strength of 200,000 pounds per square inch and a yield strength of 170,000 pounds per square inch.

Tensile strength is the amount of stress that it takes to cause the steel to fail. Yield strength is the resistance of the metal to becoming permanently deformed in response to stress. In practice, yield strength is what keeps the bar from becoming bent during use.

Steel products should be built from materials with adequate tensile and yield strength, but these properties should not be increased above this level, because it will decrease toughness. Despite this, many companies elevate their tensile strength in an arms race to be able to advertise higher numbers, but instead decrease the longevity of their barbells.

In our testing, the maximum stress that a barbell shaft experienced was 144,000 pounds per square inch. Therefore the yield strength of 170,000 pounds per square inch is well above what a bar would experience in normal use, while not requiring our tensile strength to be elevated above what is required. The amount of whip that a bar has is predominantly determined by the diameter of the shaft, but can be influenced by the tensile strength of the steel. For this reason, we chose a tensile strength that while being in the optimum range, between 190,000 PSI and 215,000 PSI, is still higher than most bars on the market.

In addition to the specifications of our stainless steel, which are optimized for barbell performance, both short or long term, we have found that our stainless steel has a greater resistance to becoming bent than other steels with the same tensile and yield strength.

Our stainless steel is also particularly well suited to having its fatigue life increased by our Rogue Work Hardening (RWH) process. The areas of the shaft that receive the greatest stress are treated with our patented RWH. Rogue Work Hardening of our stainless steel leads to an even longer fatigue life than our other barbell steels, which are already many times more durable than what is available from other manufacturers. With a tested score of F-10R, the Rogue Hybrid Power Bar has the highest F-Scale durability rating of any Rogue barbell with standard-length sleeves.

By designing the Rogue Hybrid Power Bar with serious lifters in mind, taking into account all we have learned about barbell manufacturing and making no compromises with respect to materials or manufacturing practices, we have created a barbell that will become the go-to bar for athletes at all levels.

Key Features of the Rogue Hybrid Power Bar

Optimized for Powerlifting and Strength Programs
1

Optimized for Powerlifting and Strength Programs

Bars made for powerlifting have a more aggressive knurl, a center knurl, less whip, knurl markings specified by powerlifting federations, and sleeves with controlled spin. The Rogue Hybrid Power Bar incorporates all of these and is optimized for powerlifters or any other athletes who prioritize strength training as part of their program. In addition to making the bar easier to grip for deadlifts, the 28.5 MM diameter will be appreciated by athletes who include power cleans or other Olympic lifts as part of their program, as it makes it easier to use a hook grip. This is a rare feature for bars that are also optimized for the slow lifts.

Aggressive Knurl
2

Aggressive Knurl

With a 2XAGGRO knurl as developed for our AGGRO power bars, the aggressive knurl of the Rogue Hybrid Power Bar is created through advanced tooling and specially designed so that we can produce a precision, repeatable pattern that looks as good as it grips without feeling sharp in the hands or against the athlete’s shoulders. The bar includes standard Powerlifting knurl marks as well as a full 2XAGGRO center knurl.

Maximized Feel of Stainless Steel
3

Maximized Feel of Stainless Steel

The stainless steel shaft of the Hybrid Power Bar is 28.5mm in diameter, slightly thinner than a typical power bar. This creates an even better feel on the bar, as the 2XAGGRO knurl feels more prominent than it would on a 29 MM shaft. The lack of any coating also gives the user the “true” grip we intended to produce. Chalk not required. With a tensile strength of 200,000 PSI, the bar reduces unwanted whip, even without the thicker shaft. As many gym owners know, stainless steel has few rivals when it comes to looks, grip, and corrosion resistance, and it is low maintenance compared to other finishes.

A Note on Bar Cleaning: Rogue recommends using a synthetic bristle brush, NOT a steel brush, to clean a stainless steel shaft. Using steel on stainless steel can contaminate the stainless steel and cause rusting. See more tips here: Bar Care & Maintenance.

Superior Sleeves, Controlled Spin
4

Superior Sleeves, Controlled Spin

The Hybrid Power Bar is made to tighter tolerances, resulting in less axial and radial float of the sleeves and a smooth, controlled spin and solid feel when lifting. Each sleeve includes 16.4” of loadable length and our Proprietary Matte Black finish, which converts the surface of the steel rather than coating it, greatly improving the sleeves’ corrosion resistance and long-term color endurance.

Precision Gauging
5

Precision Gauging

Using advanced optical profilometry as well as electronic custom gauging for every aspect of the bar, we can produce bars that consistently meet our exacting standards. This applies to the knurl and the sleeve profile, as well as the features in the shaft and sleeves that result in the perfect fit when assembling the bars.

Tight Manufacturing Tolerances
6

Tight Manufacturing Tolerances

Manufactured in Columbus, Ohio, every connection in the Rogue Hybrid Power Bar has tightened tolerances measuring in the thousandths of an inch for a solid feeling bar that is without comparison in the powerlifting space. With most barbells and actually most manufactured products, there is a tradeoff between tight tolerances and reliability. This tradeoff can be avoided by precision manufacturing and machining, leading to a bar with tight tolerances that lasts a lifetime.

F SCALE™

The F Scale™ is a durability scale for barbells based on functional testing at stresses similar to what barbells experience when being dropped from overhead. Bars that have been treated with Rogue Work Hardening (RWH™) are designated by having an R in their F Rating™. For more information on F Scale™ click here.

OXIDATION RATE

The resistance of a barbell to oxidation depends on the type of steel and the coating. Barbells at the lower end of the spectrum will require more care and maintenance to preserve their appearance than barbells at the upper end of the spectrum.

Great bar with amazing knurl, sleeves need help
Great bar, 28.5mm shaft perfect for deadlifts, knurl is perfect for everyday use. Only negative is the sleeve, every time I put a plate on it leave marks, wish rogue offered stainless steal or at least hard chrome sleeve for this bar

You need this bar.
Great bar, I use this bar over the bare steel Ohio bar and the Ohio power bar every workout. Knurling is excellent, bar holds stiff in your hands and is super grippy. Aggressive but not unbearable, however, the knurling will shave some of the UHMW off your j-cups. My only con or complaint would be all the metal shavings that come on the knurling. Not really that big of a deal when you take a bristle brush and scrub the shavings off. I’ve read other reviews which said the shavings are normal from the machining process. Overall, 10/10!

Probably my favorite bar so far
Recently picked up the Hybrid Power Bar as I was looking to replace a more inexpensive 29mm bare steel powerlifting bar. I competed in Powerlifting for about 10 years and now lift for fitness. The bar arrived quickly and well packaged. The bar required a little bit of a cleaning because of some of the residue left over from the manufacturing process (or what I'm assuming to be a rust preventer coating?). Additionally there were some fine metal fragments still embedded in the knurling. Not a big deal...just grab that nylon bristle brush and go to town on it. The bar is extremely well put together. There is almost no perceivable lateral shift in the sleeves when loaded, and the sleeves spin quite well for a PL bar. This is an improvement over the Ohio Power Bar, which I used to own in bare steel. The knurling is not as aggressive as I thought it would be. Personally, I think I still prefer knurling on a bare steel barbell vs stainless, but this is subjective and I like the fact that I don't have to maintain this bar as much as I would a raw bar. It's hard to find a gripe with the Hybrid Bar, but if i had to pick one, it's the fact that the black sleeves scuff up VERY easily. Not really a big deal - take a rag and it wipes right off. You can see this in the photos. All in all a solid 5/5 purchase.

If you're on the fence...just buy it
Initial impressions of the Rogue hybrid power bar. The knurl isn't overly aggressive. It will leave impressions on your hands for a short period. If you want a bar that feels secure and solid in your hand this is the one. Some of the complaints in other reviews about metal shavings on the bar and marking the sleeves. A stainless bar will have metal shavings from the tooling process left on it. Clean it with a nylon barbell brush and put a thin coating of 3-in-one oil on the barbell and sleeves. That will help the weights slide on and off more easily.

Disappointed with this bar
I’ve used an Ohio Bar for years. I bought this bar last week because I wanted something with a deeper knurl, center knurl, and stainless shaft (the black zinc on the Ohio bar has worn a lot over the years, so I wanted something that would hold up a little better). One of the first things I noticed taking the bar out of the tube was that there are several flaws in the knurling. What’s more annoying is that the bar and sleeves are full of steel shavings (see photo of my hand). I also didn’t expect that loading and unloading plates would immediately wear off the black sleeve coating. The description says the black finish changes the surface of the steel, but loading plates takes it right off (you can see that in the background of the photo, too). I’m giving the bar two stars because once I get all the steel particles off of it it’ll function, but I wouldn’t buy it again or recommend it to anyone.

Thank you for leaving a review of your Hybrid Power Bar. As this bar's shaft is stainless, there may be some remnants of the manufacturing process leftover. This can be cleaned off with a synthetic bristle brush. Our team is evaluating the flaws in the knurling you mentioned. We apologize for the issue.

Very Nice Bar. Dead silent. Aggressive knurling
I have to say, this bar is very nice. I wanted a 28.5 mm power bar as I have smaller hands and a center knurl for back squats. This bar is dead silent. I use steel plates and for back squats, dead lifts and heavy pulls it is dead quiet which I love. The only negative is that the knurling as advertised is very aggressive. I am using a different bar for presses and bench bc my hands are soft. If I could have this bar with one step down in knurling it would be perfect for me for all 4 lifts.

The best of Rogue's Power Bars
Amazing build quality. There is zero perceptible radial or axial float in the sleeves. The spin is super smooth. As much a display piece as a functional tool. The knurl is just on the edge of sharp. If the OB is a 3/10 and an OPB is a 5/10, the HPB is a 7.5/10. Maybe half a point sharper than I would have asked for, but I'm happy with it and will adjust. I expect to use less chalk when pulling, and it feels like it's superglued to my back in the squat. I might not end up using it for Oly lifting, because that center knurl is probably going to grab clothing on it's way up. The difference between the 29.0 and the 28.5 diameter is perceptible. Hook gripping is definitely easier. All in, an excellent barbell and a new benchmark in the industry.

I love this bar!
Got this bar a few months ago, and it's been my goto over my stainless/black OPB. I can't tell a huge difference in bar diameter, but the knurling is wonderful for pulls. Shreds my back a little more than the normal knurling. It also is way less noisy when dropped.
